First stop Chiavenna, Citta Slow and flying the Orange Flag of Touring Club Italy. An aristocratic, impressive base where highly evocative corners and little ways rich in history intertwine. The native land of the "crotti".

DESCRIPTION
Having passed through the atmospheric, historic centre of Chiavenna, you take on the sun-kissed climb towards Pianazzola, the village which overlooks the town before taking the path leading to San Giacomo Filippo. From there you head up once again along the Liro river as far as Cimaganda with its enormous boulders, an excellent natural "gym" for lovers of rock-climbing. And it's a particularly interesting stretch too for its range of vegetation, as you pass through the hamlet of Vho towards the "Portarezza" quarter of Campodolcino. Once here we strongly recommend a visit to the Ecomuseum of Via Spluga (MUVIS). The path then follows the Liro once again alongside the impressive waterfall at Pianazzo then climbs further to the wall of the dam at Isola.

DESCRIPTION
Leaving behind the houses within the village at Isola, take the route that climbs to the right side of the valley, more favoured by the sun. You'll pass through the hamlets of Mottaletta and Rasdeglia, both inhabited. Then the path enters into the gorge itself, crossing the Liro stream and shortly reaches the foot of the most spectacular stretch of the outing with sections hewn out of the rock itself.
And so the mule-track continues up as though attached to the gorge rock-side. In the final stretch, right next to the dam, you move onto an almost perfect form of paving that winds in and amongst the boulders polished smooth by ancient glaciers.

DESCRIPTION
From here, by following the banks of the reservoir it's a straightforward stroll on the level to the village of Montespluga. And of course once there it's possible to go further up on foot to reach the actual Spluga Pass.
(You should envisage another 40 minutes walk, taking in a height differential of +210m to reach a little above 2100m.)
At the Pass or indeed from Montespluga you can catch the bus to return to Chiavenna for your last overnight.
