The Verlorenes Loch (literally ´lost hole´) is a narrow passage in a tunnel which passes above the old trading route, built between 1818 and 1823 representing the first carriageway through the Grigion Alps.
Today the stretch between Thusis and Rongellen remains as a architectural monument, closed to traffic however. The route through the Verlorenes Loch is cobbled and moves into the western part of the gorge taking in a gentle and constant slope. The section can be negotiated with a little agility and presents a fine chance for anyone choosing it to appreciate the tranquil ambience created by the enormous rock walls and the deep crack forming the gorge below.
